The European Motorsports season finally kicked off last Saturday after a long winter with the opening round of the popular VLN Championship around the Nürburgring Nordschleife. In preparation for Nürburgring 24 HRS all four German manufacturers had works supported cars entered from Manthey Racing, Schnitzer Schuberth, Black Falcon etc. The Bentley’s were being run by the ABT Team. After qualifying it was a schock to see that V.A.G.(Volkswagen Audi Group) entered cars dominated top Top 10. (Porsche, Audi, Bentley). Pole position went tot he Manthey-entered Porsche from Pilet/Dumas/Makowiecki ahead of the Falken entered Porsche from Vanthoor/Bergmeister/Imperatori. From the beginning both Porsches dominated the race, with the Falken entered 911 GT3 R leading for three hours but in the very last lap Vanthoor threw ita way after a misunderstanding with backmarker and hit the guardrail. That left the win to the Manthey Porsche 911 GT3 R which was clearly on a mission. In the very last lap the difference between the leaders was only 2 secs. Manthey driver Pilet: “During my stint I extra pushed. It is not nice to see a collegue going off, especially from the same marque, but that’s racing. We had a fantastic car and performance today.” The Land Audi R8 from Mies/De Phillippi/Winkelhock finished 3rd. The first Mercedes from Haupt/Al Faisal/Juncadella/Stolz finished 7th and the best BMW from Klingmann/Onslow Cole/Edwards finished 15th. Due to the BOP it was clear that a lot of teams were clearly sandbagging before the 24 Hrs.
