Heritage Motorsports drivers Tommy Riggins and Dave Machavern have battled with Joao Barbosa for the points lead in the Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series GTS class for most of the season. Now the rivals are becoming teammates as Barbosa is set to join the Heritage duo in the No. 48 Mustang for the 6 Heures du Circuit Mont-Tremblant, September 21.
Barbosa held the points lead in the GTS class for the first half of the season, racing in a Mosler MT900R. But when his team's sponsorship money dried up, he was left without a ride and lost his shot at the championship by missing the Bully Hill Vineyards 250.
"We were very impressed with his abilities when he raced against us. We thought he'd be a good fit to our team," noted team owner and driver Machavern, who extended an invitation for Barbosa to join Heritage for the Canadian six-hour event.
Although the drivers were rivals in the GTS class not too long ago, there is no ill will between them.
"Dave and I were talking about how it's funny that we will now be racing together after running against each other for so long, but it shows the good sportsmanship that you find in the Rolex Series. I think there has always been a good atmosphere created by Grand American. You can be rivals on the track and friends off of it," remarked Barbosa.
"We are looking forward to racing with him instead of against him for a change," added Machavern.
