Elkhart Lake, WI -- Peter Cunningham drove his TeamRTR Nissan Sentra SER to a home track win at Road America. Cunningham led from flag to flag to take the win which he dedicated to Jerome Zimmerman, TeamRTR's late Crew Chief.
"We would like to dedicate this race to Jerry Zimmermann," said Cunningham referring to his long-time crew chief and friend that passed away July 22.
The win was the first for Nissan in World Challenge Touring competition. Cunningham only took the win by just over a second. Tim Pappas, in the #83 Team FBR/Trans Sport Lexus IS300, battled Pierre Kleinubing, of Brazil, the first half of the race for the second spot and finally took it on lap eight. With his eye on the top spot, Pappas spent the entire second half of the race trying to run down race leader Cunningham. In the end, Pappas' second-place finish was a career-best.
"I had a piece of the roll bar padding come off and went under my foot," said Pappas describing his effort to chase down Cunningham. "I actually had to loosen my belt to pull it out and throw it into the passenger side. So, he (Cunningham) got a gap on me. I had to do it (pull the padding out) because it was under the pedals and I never got that gap back. I thought that he would maybe make a mistake. He obviously did not make a mistake. Luckily, I didn't either and had a really solid run."
