The Panoz Motor Sports team starts its assault on the 2000 American Le Mans Series in the Superflo 12 Hours of Sebring at the Florida track on Saturday, 18th March.
The Georgia based team will be defending its 1999 Teams and Manufacturers Championship titles using an evolution version of the Panoz LMP-1 Roadster S car which proved so successful last season. Over the winter break development work has been carried out on aerodynamics, brake and damper packages and the 6 liter V8 engine.
For 2000 the team has the benefit of continuity in a strong multi-national driver line up. Australian David Brabham, Dane Jan Magnussen and American Johnny O'Connell all remain with the team and are joined by newcomer Hiroki Katoh from Japan.
In the American Le Mans Series Brabham and Magnussen will be partners in car # 1 while the very experienced O'Connell will be paired with hot-shot Katoh in car # 2. For the Sebring race they will be joined by French sportscar veteran Pierre-Henri Raphanel (car 1) and Panoz Motor Sports' official test driver, German Klaus Graf (car 2).
In February's pre-race test session Jan Magnussen set a fastest time of 1m 47.68s, some 2.17 seconds faster than 1999's pole position qualifying time. The team, therefore, are looking forward to the forthcoming race with measured confidence.
