For the first time this season, Powell Motorsport took on the challenge of running two Corvettes with the extra effort paying off with first and a fourth place finish. For race winners Doug Goad and Devon Powell, victory circle is becoming a second home.
The duo have teamed up for six wins this year, and five in a row after eight races in the 2001 edition of the Grand Am Cup series. Their #11 Sunoco/ Encompass Chevrolet Corvette Z06 took the win by nearly a full lap over second place finishing Ian James and Dino Steiner in the #15 Motorsport Technologies Majestic Porsche TT.
"These races are about speed, but also strategy," said Goad. "We picked up time by diving into the pits as the caution came out. I saw the car off the track, so I knew the caution was coming. I just worked with the crew over the radio."
With the #11 Corvette checking out early in the race, the main battle in Super Grand Sports was the competition for second place. The battle ensued mainly amongst the #15 Porsche, the #98 Mallet MTI Racing Corvette, and the #65 SpeedSource Porsche.
All three cars shared time in second place late in the race. The #98 Corvette, which was being driven by Mike Weinberg and Stu Hayner, held second until lap fifty-two of sixty six when the transmission broke while the Corvette was exiting the carousel.
This left the battle to be waged between the #65 Porsche and the #15 Porsche. The last five laps were a duel between the two with the #15 Porsche coming out on top.
