| Mosport Will Be First Pit Stop Race |
|
|
Ready or not, pit stops are going to be coming back to Trans Am racing in 2001. The first race with them will be held at Mosport in May.
The Trans-Am Series and the Panoz/Sanchez Group today announced that
the first mandatory pit stop race of the 2001 season will be May 20 at
Mosport Park. Additional pit stop races will be at Portland (August 5),
Laguna Seca (Sept. 9) and San Diego (TBA). All of the pit stop races will be
125 miles in length.
"We took several factors into account when we decided which races would be
extended to 125 miles and include pit stops," said Trans-Am Series director
of competition Kevin Bayless. "We looked at the layout of the pit lanes at
the venues that the series will visit this year. It is very important that
we provide adequate space for all of the competitors so that pit stops can
be as safe as possible. We also took the available television window into
account as well as the amount of time that we are allotted by the race
promoter."
"The return of pit stop races to the Trans-Am Series will bring a new
element of strategy back to the series," said Bayless. "Fans of the series
at the four venues where pit stops will be mandatory are in for an exciting
afternoon."
The pit stops also mean that the crews will become an even larger part of the team's performance. The pitstops are part of a few key elements added by the new Panoz Sanchez Group to add more excitement to the Trans Am Series.
