This past weekend I went to Las Vegas to compete in the American Le Mans Series in a GT class Porsche GT3R with Petersen Motorsports. I also drove a Porsche GT3 Cup car for Petersen Motorsports in the Speedvision World Challenge GT series. Finally, I drove a BMW 328 for TC Kline Racing in the Speedvision World Challenge Touring Car series. Thankfully, getting enough seat time has not been my biggest problem this season.
Las Vegas Motor Speedway is an oval with an infield road course attached. It is a fairly interesting course for a roval, but it has some tricky sections where traffic is concerned - and did I ever have problems with traffic.
PRACTICE AND QUALIFYING
A Thursday test day was held and I tested the ALMS Porsche GT3R and the Porsche GT3 Cup car. Both tests went fairly well.
Official practice began on Friday. It rained in the morning and I went out in the BMW on dry tires, which was about as much fun as lighting your hair on fire and putting it out with a hammer. I pitted after about four laps.
The weather improved for the afternoon sessions. I had two World Challenge practice sessions and ALMS round one qualifying. I was second quickest in the Touring BMW and quickest in the GT Porsche. My co-driver Cort Wagner handled the qualifying session for ALMS. Round one qualifying was a throw away because the track wasn't quite dry.
