SPEED World Challenge Wednesday (November 1, 2006) By Jim Bourn
There is absolutely no animosity between SCCA and Mr. Gigliotti. I personally enjoy my conversations and the debates with Lou. I have been very impressed with his driving. After viewing the in-car video from Sebring that Lou posted on his website, I visited his trailer at St. Petersburg. I told Lou that I saw great driving skill in the Sebring video and that, if I ran a race program, I would consider hiring him. He said that meant a lot to him. The World Challenge Series is fortunate to have so many great teams and drivers as partners. All of our partners are professional and conduct themselves to very high standards. - Harry Turner
The 2006 GT Championship will end eventually
If you follow the SPEED World Challenge Series much at all at this point you are more than likely aware that on the morning before the final race of the 2006 GT season at Laguna Seca Lou Gigliotti filed a protest with SCCA citing irregularities with the Brakes on the Jon Groom 997 Porsches.
According to Lou Gigliotti the process had actually started earlier in the week as he said that he had approached Aaron Coalwell to verify the legality of the brakes on the Groom cars on Wednesday.
I already knew that the cars were illegal but I wanted him to find it before I protested, Gigliotti said.
Lou indicated that on Friday and Saturday he again contacted Coalwell but when no action was taken he filed his protest at the beginning of qualifying.
The meat of Gigliotti's protest revolved around the brake rotors used as covered by section 2.12.3.1 which stipulates that rotors be, One or two piece ferrous rotors not to exceed 355 mm diameter by 33mm thick.
The VTS for the Porsche 997 allows a variance if the original equipment brake rotors are used which are larger than the 14 inch standard WCGT rotor Additionally a 997 racing with the OE brakes is given a 50 pound weight reduction.
According to Gigliotti the Jon Groom 997 Porsche's have been, during the last 7 races, been competing with illegal brakes AND running 50 pounds light in the process.
Again according to Lou Gigliotti SCCA indicated that the brake rotors did not match the VTS for the 997.
