Eric Curran wins the Touring Car pole position at Laguna Seca
Eric Curran won his second straight Touring Car pole position here at Laguna Seca as Eric and his Acura Certified Pre-Owned Acura RSX have shown seemingly total disregard for the championship battle between Pierre Kleinubing and Randy Pobst
Going into this race it has been really all about Randy and Pierre and obviously I am on Pierre's side and I want to help in any I can but I am a racing driver as well and I want to do the best I can do for myself, Curran said after his qualifying run.
Once again there didn't seem to be any strategy in the RealTime camp as Curran at least did the best he could with what he had, which was plenty!
Obviously we are rooting for him and I will help him in any way I can but I obviously want to have the best finish of the year I can as well, said Curran We went over a lot of scenarios but we couldn't be sure of anything so the best thing was to do the best I could and try to take the pole away from Randy.
We gambled on the setup a little bit and it paid off. We made a pretty big change going into today's qualifying from yesterday.
Curranonly did one hot lap and parked his RealTime Racing RSX in hopes of saving the tires for the race as Eric seemed more concerned about tomorrow's race than his second consecutive pole.
I did one lap and that was the pole lap and I parked the car, said of his qualifying run. I mean I'm really worried about putting any heat or overheating the tires in any way and I didn't want to run the whole session. With these tires you need to get it done by lap two or you aren't going to be quite as quick.
I am always nervous about how many laps we are putting on these tires, Curran continued. I did really what I thought was a perfect lap and put all the pieces together right away and it was one of those things. I was happy with it and the car was good so I didn't feel the need to put any more laps on it even it meant knocking me down a couple positions.
