Andrew Wojteczko surprised many as he was near the top of the order at one point during qualifying - Jim Bourn photo

Not your usual qualifying session
To begin with the cars were running in groups as usually drivers like separation for their qualifying lap and then the track was drying as the cars were burning the water off the line so the times started dropping lap by lap jumbling up the order.
The first surprise of the session was that Toronto driver Andrew Wojteczko, perhaps knowing where things dry faster than most at Mosport, hammered out a lap of 1:36.494 in his Auto Analyser Services Lexus IS300 moving up to 2nd in the order.
It was like I was seeing the ghost of Mike Fitzgerald! Andrew would record a 1:31.761 later in the going to qualify 7th.
Kleinubing then took over the point with a 35.1 and Phil Parlato jumped to P3 in his Phil's Auto Body BMW. At this point the times started dropping as the grid started changing several times a lap as each driver got more and more comfortable as the track started to dry a bit.
That was a fun qualifying session, said Kuno Wittmer. Wet but fun!
We tried a rain setup and that wasn't working, Wittmer said. A rear sway bar bracket broke or fell off so I came in and the crew fixed that. I came out in front of Randy (Pobst) and Peter (Cunningham) and I didn't want to mess up their laps so I fell back behind them.
Finding the handling of his Autohaus Mercedes C230 more to his liking Kuno, who hadn't been near the top ten all day, used the draft from Randy Pobst and seemingly Randy got help from Wittmer as both moved themselves up well in the order to, for a while at least, into 2nd and third with times of 1:31.520 and 1.629.
