SPEED World Challenge Mosport Special Edition 2006 - GT Qualifying (September 2, 2006) By Jim Bourn
With the rain coming I knew I had to do it in the first lap. I knew I needed to get in a good time while it was still semi-dry. - Ron Fellows
Team Cadillac takes the GT front row in damp Mosport qualifying
Everyone knew it was coming and as the SPEED World Challenge GT cars were lining up on the false grid drivers and crew men were nervously glancing skyward while they chatted away the time before the session was to begin.
All of the cars were on dry tires and most were using their usual qualifying setups as they were hoping that they could get in a lap before the rains came.
But before all of the drivers had entered the cars light drops were starting to fall prompting the ALMS cars which were on track at the time to scurry to the safety of the pits.
When the World Challenge GT cars finally started to head out on to the track there was a light rain falling so everyone charged out onto the Mosport track hoping to get in a hot lap before the track got too wet.
Ron Fellows did just that as he found just enough traction and made his first hot lap stand up as he turned in a 1:25.498 in the #16 XM/Mobil 1/Motorola/On Star Cadillac CTS-V which held up for the pole position.
I stayed on the track after that good first lap because it looked like it might dry up, but when it started raining hard I came in, Fellows said. Fortunately I could see the scoreboard going into turn 8 and I saw my #16 in the top spot!
