The rains came early in the day on Saturday and it rained and rained until late in the afternoon. The race should have started at 2:00, but the track was under water at that time. As the track dried, Motorola Cup officials decided to run the race for two hours starting at 4:15. Amazingly, the race ran completely dry although there was standing water remaining at the blindingly fast kink.
Taking the victory was the driving talents of Chuck Goldsborough and Rick Fairbanks in the Lexus GS400. The win came in an amazing late race battle that saw the top four separated by just under five seconds at the four mile Road America circuit.
The #9 Team Lexus had to hold off a very fast Andy Lally driving the #49 Comprep BMW 328 in the closing stages of the race. As the two were fighting for the top position, the third and fourth place cars caught up and were now involved in a four way battle for the lead in the waning moments of the race.
On the last lap, Lally was passed by a hard charging Team Spartanburg Racing BMW Z3. The third place for Lally and co-driver Howie Liebengood was enough to put Liebengood in sole ownership of the top spot in the 2000 Driver's Championship. The battle for the championship is very tight, as Liebengood only holds a one point lead over second place in points Jeff Trask, driver of the TSR Z3.
