| Road America Grand Sports Race Story |

The rains came early in the day on Saturday and it rained and rained until late in the afternoon. The race should have started at 2:00, but the track was under water at that time. As the track dried, Motorola Cup officials decided to run the race for two hours starting at 4:15. Amazingly, the race ran completely dry although there was standing water remaining at the blindingly fast kink.
When the race did start, Benoit Theetge and Sylvain Tremblay took control of the race on their way to a surprise win in their Wynn's Racing 1996 Acura NSX. The win proved the amazing parity in the Motorola Cup Series. Acura becomes the fourth different manufacturer to win in the Grand Sports Class.
Second in class was also somewhat of a surprise as Chris Thompson and Gerald Thompson in the #78 Thompson Motorsports Firebird. Thompson's best finish prior to this race was a ninth place at Sebring and Mid-Ohio.
Coming in third was the Ford Mustang of Larry Rehagen and Rick Dishaw in the Big Sky Motorsport entry.
Fourth place was the first position filled by a regular at the top of the charts in the year 2000, Brett Shanaman and Sam Shanaman. The two are making a serious bid at the Grand Sports Driver's Championship in the WetFeet.com WindRiver Racing Pontiac Firebird. Their championship hopes took a great leap forward as the points leaders Al Wortzman and Mike McCalmont finished twelfth in the Mical Motorsports Porsche 993. The Shanamans now sit just six point behind the Mical Motorsports drivers in the driver's championship.
