Jeff Mishtawy showed that despite the arrival of many new big guns in the USTCC for 2006, he is still the one to contend with by winning the Mid Ohio round of the Hankook United States Touring Car Championship (USTCC) on April 23, 2006.

The Mid Ohio round was the season opener on the East schedule of the USTCC and there were a lot of new teams and drivers that had a chance to win. Qualifying showed that this was going to be a tight race. Toby Grohovec in the Classic BMW/Red Line Oil BMW 330i was the leader after the first practice session. Grohovec was also the leader after the first qualifying session, getting the provisional pole with a time of 1.42.652. Jeff Mishtawy stayed close with a qualifying time of 1.43.055 in his Motorkars/APR/Stasis Engineering Audi A4. Third fastest was Dino Hamilton's Hamilton Racing Dodge SRT-4 which set a time of 1.45.812. On Sunday, the teams returned for the second qualifying session to see if they could improve their times. Almost everyone did improve and the field was much closer. This time Mishtawy improved his time to a 1.42.659 missing the pole by 7/1000th of a second which has to be a USTCC record. Behind him were Hamilton who improved his time to a 1.42.898, Grohovec who did not improve his time but managed to hang on to the pole by the narrowest of margins, and Wade Powell who did a 1.43.513 in the Above All Engineering BMW 328i.
